Inverses was a rocky road to walk. I started shooting February Twenty Sixth, two days after our baby star Equine was born. I had started pre-production a year earlier with no idea what I was getting into.
Wix was a living mythology and I knew I had make a film around her. I planned on traveling for a bit then returning (to Bloomington,In.) to shoot. When I made it back she had not yet returned from her travels to the NorthWest. I postponed production and worked on some details. I then found out she was pregnant. My entire script and schedule was out the window. I knew that by the time she'd given birth and recovered from the pregnancy her girl Nadja would be too old to play the part I'd envisioned.
With no word from her I decided to write the script for a pregnant woman. This script fell through when she did not show up for another three months.
Wicks returned to Bloomington in November of 2001. She was huge. She'd found a farm house in near by Bedford Indiana and invited me out. We worked out a new production schedule around the birth of Equine.
I traveled out to Bedford on that February morn to witness a beautiful family in a perfect setting. I knew I had a gem.
A lot of the footage of the baby used in the film was shot on that day. Shooting a new born was a treat. We used a lot of tape over the next couple of days. We were into production.
Production went smoothly over the next couple of months. When it came time to shoot the part (Stephanie Dodge's role), I ran into several problems. We were behind schedule, the script was not working, and the first actor for the part fell flat.
I decided to write a new section of the script, recast and continue shooting around those scenes. It became increasingly difficult to schedule her- she was having troubles at home and was moving her family into a new home. This would be just the first of countless relocations after she moved back to Indiana.
My production was embarrassingly behind schedule at this point. After a very long hunt I cast Stephanie Dodge. She was perfect. I was running out of time- I had a trip planned to Provence France looming and only a couple of weeks to complete shooting.
After another re-write to cope with this new reality I started rehearsals with Stephanie and Wix. When it came down to it- we failed to finish in time. Wix's home life was deteriorating and she was simply not available to shoot.
I left for Provence with nothing from the project but a unshot script and a edit titled 'Salvaged footage'. It was a disaster for me. "Her Inverse" (the working title) was just one more incomplete project; another failure.
I was pretty low in France but the beauty of the region really healed me. After several months I returned home.
Wix was pregnant again her boy friend Lanny (Gabriel in the film) had gotten busted with several pounds of psychotropic mushrooms. None of this discouraged me. I raged forward and shot as quickly as possible. I then waited for another window to complete my production: between when Wix recovers and Lanny gets sent to prison.
